TRAINING TIPS

BIRDS<BIRDS<BIRDS.... I cannot stress enough the importance of having your pup on
point and letting them chase at a young age. Pigeons and flight conditioned adult quail
or liberated bobwhite quail work best. This lets your pup learn how to use it's nose and
learn to hunt for birds in different types of cover. The more exposure to this the better.
Poor flying birds should not be used as the pup may catch the bird. We use remote
launchers with older pups to flush birds when the pup tries to creep in, this will teach
pup that they can not move or bird flies away. For very young pups, DO NOT
OVERDUE IT...while it is nice to see your pup on point, only do 1 or 2 birds at a time,
do not run pup as you would a older hunting dog.....
Leash and Whoa
Pup needs to be broke to the leash at a young age learning that you are in control.
Start the whoa on a placement board or on the ground making it a good experience
with lots of rubbing and petting. Do not expect him to stay on the board or stay still, if
pup moves gently pick pup up and set pup back and pet him saying "whoa, whoa" over
and over while he is standing still. DO NOT SAY WHOA TO PUP WHILE ON POINT.
They will not honor it and if you put pup back in place or scold for moving you might
make them scared of the bird scent and birds. They may imprint the bird caused them
the pain and not the creeping. Whoa training is done away from birds.........
Retrieving
Most pointing breeds really do like the retrieve game, but it must be started at a young
age. Start pup in a long hallway with a few simple retrieves using an old clean sock.
Excite pup with sock. When pup tries to run by you in hall catch pup and hold pup
nicely while petting. Let pup hold sock in it's mouth while you pet. This should be done
as a fun game NO YELLING OR CHASING of pup.

PUPPY TRAINING FOR YOUR RETRIEVING BREEDS
Basically identical to # 1 on the pointing breeds puppy training except you can also gun
break at a early age while pup is running hard after a thrown bumper, dead quail etc.
on a retrieve. Start far away with cap pistol and have a friend shoot cap pistol while pup
is on HOT pursuit of flushed bird or after thrown bumper on a retrieve. Have helper be
behind you about 50 yards to start with and only have helper move closer with gun if
you see that pup does not even acknowledge the sound.
Retrieving of fresh killed quail, pigeons and teal. You must do this if you expect to turn
your pup into a predator and want them to retrieve game. Your retriever pup was born
a predator and with great retrieving instinct BUT it needs MOM {you} to show it how to
hunt so to speak. Many dogs that come to us for training have no instinct to pick up
birds and are scared of them.
Leash and Obedience If you expect your pup to learn to heel, come when called, and
sit until told to move, you must start this and work on it ON LEASH more than you do
the retrieving game. Make sessions only 10 minutes long or so, but do at least twice a
day. At a young age make it fun with alot of praise and no punishment. Remember your
young pup has a short attention span and a mind like a child. Don't overdue.
Retrieving. While your pup will probably show great retrieving desire, make sure that
you do not overdue it. Most of the HOT Field trail bloodline puppies will look very
impressive by 4 months of age or so, on long and even somewhat difficult retrieves on
both land and water BUT if you continue to daily work your pup on these retrieves, you
may see your pup start to develop a very aggressive retrieving desire with no patience
or discipline. If your pup when held back on a retrieve or steadied for 5 to 10 seconds,
barks &, whines or goes crazy and tries to escape your grasp, then you will end up
with a 1 year old the same way. It may take till age 3 before the pup starts to settle
down and more then likely will be very undependable in the duck blind for life.
Your pup needs to know patience, quietness and calmness. Some pups seem to be
calm and quiet and they can continue to be run on daily retrieves with no bad side
effects, BUT if your pup is high strung during retrieves and acts out of control, only
work on retrieving once a week or so and if 4 months of age or older start to steady
pup up till they stop barking whining or fighting you. I like to hold a 4 month old or older
that is showing this behavior till they calm down, then I send them. They quickly learn
that if quiet and calm they will get to go. This will help pup to be a little more patience
without hurting the desire you built up to 4 months of age. If you are confused about
this subject please call or email and I will be happy to answer any questions you may
have.
