Training for Springers, Boykins, Cockers & Water Spaniels
for Upland Flushing, D0ve & Waterfowl Hunting
David Healan and Alley JH
Premier Gundogs Spaniel training had long been a specialty of Dale's. Dale's
grandfather was a avid springer man and taught Dale at a young age the secrets to
success with the spaniels. The key to spaniel training is by utilizing the natural ability
of each dog while incorporating many of the same techniques used in our Hunting
Retriever Training for both Foundation & Formal Spaniel work.
The spaniels can really put the birds in the air and make for great Dove and Waterfowl
dogs but may come as a test for the average trainer. Our Spaniel program is designed to
bring the best out of your little ball of fire. There is a heavy emphasis on quartering
skills and whistle work for the upland portion of this training.
Most all spaniels have a very natural retrieve and can be taught to delivery to hand with
English style training techniques. The hold command is taught during Formal Training
and is expected on all retrieves.
Marking skills for the Dove/Duck dog are accomplished by the aid of a helper. The
"Watch" command is a must for the accomplished dove and duck dog. The use of real
setups aids in the quick advancement on this type of training.
Advanced dogs can be trained for HRC, BSS & AKC Hunt Test or Field Trials. HRC
upland testing is a great way to show of your finished Spaniel.
